What to expect at a sick child visit

  • Basic check of your child’s vitals
  • A comprehensive exam
  • Diagnosis and treatment plan for your child’s symptoms

As with any person, preventative pediatric flu treatment is the most effective method to avoid the flu virus. General flu prevention methods along with a seasonal flu vaccination can help decrease the risk of children contracting the virus. However, if your child has contracted the flu there are flu treatment options available at Kids First Pediatrics to minimize symptoms and stop the virus from spreading.

General Flu Prevention Methods

  • Washing hands with soap and water
  • Avoid touching mouth, eyes or nose before washing hands
  • Do not share personal items with another person during flu outbreak

If your child has the flu, but does not need medical attention, it is advised to have them stay at home to prevent the spread of the virus. Children who are in schools or daycare have an increased risk of spreading or contracting the virus because of the number of children in such a confined area.

Seasonal Flu Vaccination

The use of the seasonal flu vaccination in high-risk groups, such as children, is the best form of preventing the virus from spreading and for your child to avoid contracting the flu virus. The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) provides detailed information for children and the flu vaccination here. Children who are between 6 months and 8 years old and are receiving their first flu vaccination are required to get two doses of vaccinations. Some children who have previously had the vaccination may also have two doses recommended for them. Our physicians at Kids First Pediatrics can inform you on whether your child needs two doses or not.

There are also two different forms of the vaccination available to children. One is the standard flu vaccination shot, while the other is a nasal spray vaccination.

Nasal Spray Vaccination– is the preferential quadrivalent vaccination in children 2 years to 8 years old if it is available. If it is not available, acquiring the vaccination should not be delayed.

Standard Flu Shot- quadrivalent flu shot protects against four strains of the flu virus. The shot form of the vaccination is usually more available than the nasal spray.

The CDC recommends that the child should be vaccinated as soon as possible with whatever option is available.

Antiviral Pediatric Flu Treatment

If your child has contracted the flu virus, there are options for flu treatment. The most common and effective method of treatment is the use of neuraminidase inhibitors (oseltamivir, zanamivir). These antiviral treatments inhibit the release of the virus and thus stop the spread of it as well. These treatments can decrease the duration of the virus in your child and limit the severity of symptoms. They should be taken within 2 days of the onset of flu symptoms.
